The CIRDÒC – Mediatèca occitana is a public multimedia library dedicated to the occitan language.
It is meant to save, promote and expand the occitan heritage and creation.
The CIRDÒC is an original organization, fitted to history and geography af occitan language, whose influence covers 1000 years of vivid culture in 8 european regions (6 french regions, 1 italian region and 1 spanish region).
The CIRDÒC is in particular responsible of a great virtual and cooperative multimedia library, which is meant to be for occitan patrimony and creation a true source of multimedia circulation.
Lo CIRDÒC – Mediatèca occitana historical review :
1975 – Creacion of the Occitan Documetation International Centre (CIDO, association law 1901) Through the impetus given by Yves Rouquette, Robert Sirc and Jacques Boisgontier, the first multimedia library devoted to a minority language is created in Béziers. Thus, they realized the very ancian project of a main library about occitan language and culture. For 20 years, the CIDO will constituate the bigger occitan collection which was ever assembled, now belonging to the CIRDOC collections.
1999 – The occitan development interregional center inauguration In 1999, the Languedoc-Roussillon region and the city of Béziers wanted to develop the remarkable hangover constitued by CIDO collections (given to Beziers city in 1995). A public establishment is created directed by an open joint syndicate to give CIRDOC, interregional establishment, the opportunity to progressivly develop its action on the whole occitan language territory.
2006 – The CIRDÒC become associated centre to the French national Library Thanks to its collections development and its expertise about occitan patrimony and creation, the CIRDOC signs in 2006 for a first covenant which made it associate centre to the French national Library and the Montpellier BMVR for everything which touchs "occitan language and civilization". Among new missions assignated to this etablishment of documentary excellence, producing an occitan bibliography and developing cooperation around occitan patrimony.
The conservatory of occitan language and history :
With more than 80 000 works from the XVI century to nowadays (manuscrits, archives, books, journals, music scores, sound and audiovisual records, engravings, posters, photographies, artifacts, etc.), the CIRDOC is the great conservatory of occitan language and culture. Thanks to a sustained policy of accession and to many donations and legacies, collections are continually developing.
Since 2006, the CIRDOC is associated center to the French national Library for "occitan language and civilization" and is leading many projects of cooperation between various resource centres and occitan patrimony actors.
An interregional institution :
The CIRDÒC is an original structure, fitted to history and geography af occitan language, whose influence covers 1000 years of vivid culture in 8 european regions (6 french regions, 1 italian region and 1 spanish region). The CIRDÒC develops interregional actions around ocitan patrimony and creation : coproduction of events like the occitan cinema festival "Lantèrna digital" in partnership with Catalan Generality (Spain), supporting project leading in every region, occitan knowledge and development tools creation (occitan bibliography, internet portal "La Pòrta d'òc" -www.laportadoc.eu", edition observatory), exhibitions or documentation conception and loan. Finally, it leads the project of a great virtual cooperative multimedia library about occitan patrimony and creation.
At the core of Béziers, the center is also a great multimedia library open for everyone where you can come and discover occitan culture diversity and wealth. In particular, the multimedia library offers to public consultation and loan of all the actual occitan production : literature, music, audio-visual. It offers also specialized collection in french and foreign languages to study and discover 1000 years of occitan culture. The multimedia library is also a tool for schools, associations, cultural centers use and for every oraginzation which wants to research about occitan language and culture or to spread it.
True city of the occitan culture, the CIRDÒC - Mediatèca occitana is a place to exchange and to discover around occitan language and culture : exhibitions, conferences, projections, debates.
